LAKE EYRE TWO DAY ACCOMMODATED FLIGHT - OVERNIGHT BIRDSVILLE
TOUR CODE: LE/BDV/2

LAKE EYRE IS A CENTRAL FOCUS POINT OF THIS FLIGHT,  HOWEVER IT IS A SMALL PART OF A HUGELY VARIED AND VERY RICH FLIGHT OVER THIS OUTBACK PART OF AUSTRALIA.. YOUR FLIGHT WILL COVER A LARGE PART OF AUSTRALIA, ITS OUTBACK HISTORY AND INTERESTING LEGENDS.

LAKE EYRE:  ADELAIDE - OLYMPIC DAM - “MARREE MAN” - LAKE EYRE SOUTH & NORTH - CHANNEL COUNTRY - BIRDSVILLE - COONGIE LAKES - INNAMINCKA - BUS TOUR OF COOPER CREEK - BURKE AND WILLS’ DIG TREE, QUEENSLAND – FLINDERS RANGES – WILPENA - ADELAIDE.

About once every ten years heavy rains create restoring floods that fill parched waterholes, giving life, which creates a flood of dependent animal, bird and plant life.  It is amazing to fly over thousands of square kilometres of vast desert country, then find the country refreshed from recent floods.

Dick Lang’s Desert-Air Safaris was the first air safari company to operate to Lake Eyre - in 1974 - and every year since then. Your flight is the most comprehensive and interesting trip of the Outback of South Australia and Queensland.  You have the history, legend, beauty and relaxation of our Centre, all in an action-packed two day safari.

DAY 1    Depart from the General Aviation Terminal, Kel Barclay Avenue, Adelaide Airport at 8.30 a.m.  (Please be ready for boarding at 8.00 a.m.)  Fly north over Pt Augusta past Lake Torrens, past Woomera to land at Roxby Downs, site of the largest Uranium and Copper mine in the world.  Fly across Lake Eyre South near the point reached by Edward John Eyre.  See small islands in Lake Eyre North.  See the huge Madigan Gulf off to the east which is the site of Donald Campbell’s world land speed record.  This is also the site where Dick Lang tried for another world record - the first to ski across Lake Eyre in 1974.  See the island in the centre of the Lake where early pastoralists were shipwrecked.  It was also here that Dick led an expedition by boat to become one of the few ever to navigate down Coopers Creek and across Lake Eyre, also in 1974.  You will see all of Lake Eyre, but note that not all of its surface may be covered in water.but you will still see the incredible beauty of its glistening surface and its varied hues.  Lunch in the air as we fly along the Lake to see the mouth of Coopers Creek, then north over the Tirari Desert to the Warburton and where the Diamantina Flood Plains spill out.  Fly over the edge of the Simpson Desert to land at Birdsville.    A short tour of Birdsville, recently marooned for two months by floodwaters and then a tour of the very interesting “Birdsville Working Museum”.  Time for a stroll around this iconic township before dinner in the famous Birdsville Hotel.

DAY 2     After breakfast, depart Birdsville to fly across typical country of the Simpson - claypans, flats and sand dunes.  Into South Australia and across the edge of Sturt’s Stony Desert.  See the beautiful Coongie Lakes System - a huge inland lake system in the heart of a desert - wetlands, quite rare throughout the world.  Land at Innamincka, with time to explore the township and Cooper Creek.  Our own special bus will take us along the banks of beautiful Cooper Creek.  See a few different forms of birdlife wheeling above.  Travel out to the pristine Yidniminckinie Waterhole in Coopers Creek to see the site of Burke’s Grave in a beautiful grove of gum and coolabah trees on the bank of the Cooper.  (There may be times when the floods have cut this track and we then visit significant aboriginal historical sites).  Depart Innamincka, flying back into Queensland and land at Nappamerrie on a small bush strip, to stroll through the coolabahs and visit the most famous tree in Australia - the Dig Tree of Burke and Wills’ fame (Please note that some departures may see instead  the flood waters of the mighty Cooper flowing over this site, in which case we will see this from the air).   Listen to the history of the drama enacted here.  Depart Nappamerrie and fly down the length of the desert traversing Strzelecki Creek.  Fly directly between historic Lake Blanche, fed by the Strzelecki and on the eastern side, Lake Callabonna, now a famous fossil reserve (resting place of many complete extinct animals).  Fly along the spine of the Flinders Ranges to see Mount Fitton mines, Yudnamutana, Mount Painter, Arkaroola, the huge and rugged Gammon Ranges.  See Mount McKinlay, named after the explorer who was part of our historic weekend -  fly past Wilpena Pound, this time at a higher altitude for a different view. Land at Pt Augusta to refuel then fly over Pt Pirie  and the Gulf Of St Vincent before landing in Adelaide at 5 p.m. approximately.

DEPARTS:  September  22.    See Lake Eyre - Innamincka 2 Day Flight for more departures.
