3 DAY ACCOMMODATED FLIGHT
DAY 1
Depart General Aviation Terminal, Adelaide Airport at 9.00 a.m. Please be ready to board by 8.30 a.m. Fly over Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert, along the length of the Coorong, to land at Mount Gambier (with its beautiful lakes) to refuel. Over the port and business centre of Portland and then across Bass Strait to land at isolated and remote King Island, seen and visited by few people. A visit to the famous King Island dairy which places its cheeses in specialist shops around Ausralia. We are invited to a cheese tasting to appreciate the wide range of delicious cheeses which range from subtle Bries to smoky , tangy blues. Buy a sample of goods for home and friends. A drive along the shores of King Island watching the big rollers coming in from the Southern Ocean dumping waves and kelp on the foreshore. This amazing material is harvested by licence and forms a valuable income to the Islanders. We all use a kelp product in the course of our daily lives and we visit the Kelp factory to find out more about it. Our pleasant motel has a stunning dining room which overlooks the Southern Ocean
DAY 2
Fly down the remote and rugged west coast of Tasmania. If it is cloud-free, it is a remarkable sight, seen by very few, as no air routes pass by. Land at Strahan airport and transfer through this pretty port to the ancient railway station. There is an optional extra of a trip on the special gear-toothed Abt railway. This rail trip takes you up through the beautiful King River gorge in close contact with the lush rainforest of the area. The rail trip passes over the steep mountains to Queenstown, where a waiting bus brings you back to Strahan. This is an optional extra at your own cost of $120. Please book this at time of making the tour booking. The alternative to the rail trip is to walk the interesting harbour of Strahan OR walk out of town to a very beautiful National Park showing rainforest and typical trees of the area. Our motel is very nice and we dine with stunning views of Macquarie Harbour.
DAY 3
An early morning stroll from your motel around this pristine, beautiful port of Strahan. After breakfast, a morning departure on the famous Gordon River/Franklin River cruise across Macquarie Harbour (scene of Hell's Gate and Sarah Island, setting for the old novel "For the Term of His Natural Life", by Marcus Clarke). You are able to buy your own lunch on board the large cruising boat, while looking at the natural Tasmanian beauty around you. This cruise takes you deep into the World Heritage areas towards, but not into, the Franklin River. Return to Strahan and transport out to the airport. If there is no cloud or strong winds over the ranges, we depart over the spectacular mountain scenery of the World Heritage area of Lake St Clair and Cradle Mountain. Into Wynyard for fuel. Across Bass Strait, we fly over the Port Campbell National Park, along the Great Ocean Road route to view the Twelve Apostles. Into Mount Gambier to refuel, returning to Adelaide by 7.30 p.m.
