Your Pilot

Outback Adventurer Dick Lang
Dick Lang and his long time Gunbarrel Highway mate, Len Beadell, were the first to cross the Victoria Desert by bus in 1986.

In recent years we piloted our DC-3s into the remote outback.

In recent years we piloted our DC-3s into the remote outback.

Dick is one of Australia’s best bush pilots. He has lived and worked in the Outback for most of his life. He has flown rescue operations into the desert regions and has flown into the hardest flying country in the world – Papua New Guinea. Dick is also a fully accredited command Airline Captain.

With his wife, Helen, Dick started Desert-Trek, Australia’s oldest 4WD safari company. Desert-Air is also Australia’s oldest running air safari company.

Dick’s ancestors landed aboard the “Buffalo”, the first white settlers in South Australia. He and his family maintain a long tradition with the Outback of Australia.

In 1976, Dick led the last great expedition across Australia to become the second ever to cross the centre of the Australian continent without tracks, a centenary retracing of Ernest Giles, who was first in 1876.

Dick and Helen owned and operated four Douglas DC-3 aircraft on air tours, but now operate modern fast twin-engined 10 seat Piper Chieftain aircraft.

Once with bases all over Australia, they have now concentrated operations out of Adelaide Airport in South Australia.

Dick and Helen bought a house near an African National Park and commenced a large safari operation there for nearly ten years, commuting between Australian and African Safaris.

They have their own International Travel Agents Licence to cover all their operations.

They were pioneers in Ecotourism in Australia. They are licensed National Park Tour Operators around Australia.

Dick Lang’s Bush Pilots operate under their Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s Air Operators Certificate.
